This past week the Chesterhill Produce Auction was honored to have several collegiate volunteers from Wright State University help prepare for the May 10th Opening Auction.
Led by WSU faculty, Hunt Brown, Sarah Twill, and Maureen Barry, the group of student volunteers have been studying sustainable resource-based development with a focus on Appalachia. Along with their three leaders, 16 students split into groups and rotated around the greater Athens area serving at CPA, Monday Creek Restoration Project, Athens County Public Library, Green Edge Gardens, Good Works, Snowville Creamery and the Village of Glouster.
At the Chesterhill Produce Auction, the Wright State Raiders worked hard:
- tilling the new garden
- planting red skin potatoes, peach trees, and daffodils
- cleaning, sweeping, staining, painting, and organizing the Auction space
- constructing and erecting beautiful new CPA signs
The students also learned about history of Appalachian Ohio, food access, gardening, community-financed development & "slow money," AmeriCorps, Rural Action, and Chesterhill's significance in the Underground Railroad.
